The 4th grade student in the primary school in Mankweng, Limpopo, Limpopo died on Monday after swallowing the pen cap.
According to Limpopo Education Department, the student accidentally swallowed the cover and said he struggled to breathe.
Mike Maringa, the department, the student was taken to the hospital immediately, but despite the best efforts of medical workers, they could not save him, he said.
The department expressed condolences to the family and the school community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are next to our student family during this hearing time.
Maringa said the department sent psychosocial services to the family and school.
