South Africa lost 14 soldiers in the Eastern DRC confrontation in January. Most were from the Samidrc mission, but at least two were placed as part of a separate United Nations peacekeeping mission.
The three Malavian soldiers were also killed in the placement, and two of Tanzania soldiers died in the clash.
Authorities do not interpret the size of the military, but most of the troops are coming from South Africa, which is estimated to be sent to at least 1,000 troops.

The presidency of Angola said that the talks will begin next Tuesday between DRC and M23.
“After the steps taken by Angolan mediation … Representatives of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and M23 will start peace talks in Luanda on March 18,” he said.
Angolan President Yoopa Lourenco met with DRC President Feliks Tshisekedi, who refused to dialogue with M23, as he had previously demanded in Rwa.
UN experts say about 4,000 troops in East DRC, supporting Rwanda M23, said. Rwanda rejected his participation in the conflict and said that the threat of ethnic Hutu fighters in DRC.
DRC says the adventure of M23 has led to more than 7,000 people since 2025. AFP could not check this figure independently.
